After the U.S. Coast Guard called off the search for a Virginia Tech senior who fell from a Carnival cruise ship this weekend, a U.S. senator said Cameron Smook didn’t have to die.

Smook had boarded the Carnival Glory with friends Saturday and on Sunday the company informed the family that he was missing at sea, the family wrote in a public statement to the Virginia Tech community after learning that the extensive air and sea search had ended.
