Home Cruise Safely Storm-Battered Anthem of the Seas Cruise Ship Returns to Port

Anthem of the Seas is expected to set sail at 3 p.m. ET on its originally scheduled cruise itinerary, traveling from New Jersey to Florida and the Bahamas.

While the International Cruise Victims Organization is grateful for the safe return of all passengers and crew aboard the Royal Caribbean’s ship The Anthem of the Seas, they are horrified by the cruise line’s disregard for their safety.

Timko’s son, Cyril, and his wife, Dawn, were on the ship when it hit rough weather on Sunday.

But it was far worse than the forecast predicted. “I mean, those were smaller ships”.

The Anthem of the Seas – one of the world’s largest cruise ships, at more than 168,000 tons – ran into the powerful storm off the coast of the Carolinas on Sunday afternoon.

The Old Salt blog scoffed at the notion that the Anthem of the Seas was “unsafe” and concluded that the big cruise ship and others designed like it “are a lot more seaworthy than they look”.

The Anthem of the Seas incident may provide us an additional opportunity to learn best practices that cruise line operators employ for operating in heavy weather. They spent hours on lockdown in their rooms while the ship’s captain navigated out of the storm. Royal Caribbean says four passengers suffered minor injuries and the ship sustained some damage to its public areas and staterooms.

“At this point, your adrenaline is going”, Lauren said. “But that doesn’t mean you have to stay in port”, Brennan said. “Frightened I wouldn’t see my grandkids again”, Mary Robertson was with her grandson, and for them, it was a bonding experience. “I’m not sure he could have avoided this”.

Coast Guard officials conducting the investigation are being assisted by personnel from the National Transportation Safety Board, according to the Coast Guard.

“The thing about this storm was that it was forecast for days”. Nelson said from the Senate floor Monday. Every time, we’d get knocked a little off to the side.

“When I say debris, I mean huge parts of the ship”, she said.

“The Captain has been very sensitive to the rough ride guests have already experienced”.

The NTSB should follow through on the senator’s request.

Coast Guard inspectors scoured the ship for damage and gave the go-ahead for Saturday’s cruise. Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. was the topic in 21 analyst reports since August 3, 2015 according to StockzIntelligence Inc.

Does it matter that Anthem is flagged in the Bahamas?

NTSB authority was quoted by marinelog as saying: “The incident occurred in global waters and involved a Bahamian-flagged vessel, and we are actively engaged with our USA and worldwide partners to determine what would be the best course of action, in accordance with established worldwide protocols”.

“It was like a bad movie we couldn’t get out of”, Davis said. But she said, “The captain did a great job for what he had to deal with”.
