8-year-old Girl Found Unconscious in Sapphire Princess Cruise Ship Pool
An eight-year-old girl from Shanghai remains in critical condition after being found floating unconscious in a cruise ship swimming pool on the afternoon of August 5.
The girl and her mother, both surnamed Yang, departed from Shanghai three days before the incident on a cruise ship that would take them to Fukuoka, Japan and South Korea’s Chejudo Island.
The mother said she’d taken her daughter to play in the kiddy pool on the 14th floor of the ship and was lounging nearby when she noticed the girl was missing, Shanghai Daily reports. Tourists found her unconscious in a deeper pool, and surveillance footage showed that the girl had been struggling for some seven to nine minutes before she was discovered.
The cruise liner, Sapphire Princess, said that no life guards are on duty and parents are responsible for watching their children. Several warning signs written in Chinese are placed around the pool, it said.
